Commissioning Your Project

The Essence of our Approach

Rhapsody in Wood is a special kind of furniture source. We design and create collectible-quality fine wood furnishings especially for individual customers. We provide for unique tastes and applications; essentially delivering the ultimate limited edition. Our products are singularly handmade using premium furniture woods and finishes.

Beginning with aesthetic and structural design, we apply our knowledge of wood and traditional furniture making methods, and then skillfully execute our work for the best in personal service.

How it happens…

1. Awareness

It all begins with awareness. Maybe it’s a recently conceived idea. Maybe an idea you’ve had for some time, still waiting, is yet to be realized. Then there’s the connection … to us. Personal referral, printed literature, or web based information help make that happen. And as a single awareness leads to another, you learn how we might help bring imagination to form.

2. First Contact

This is where thought becomes possibility and an idea is lofted in potential. We begin by listening. Your description originates the dialog through which we learn, inviting clarity as we go. An email or a call is enough to get started.

3. Initial Consultation

When practical, it’s helpful to meet in the space for which the furnishings are being created. Whether in your home, your office, a public space, or other site, this meeting gives context to all things considered. For this no-cost initial consultation it will be helpful for you to bring any descriptive images and criteria you already have, such as sketches, photos, and dimensions.

We’ll spend some time describing our services to clarify how we work and how costs are determined. We’ll talk a bit about the design, creation, and delivery steps of our process.

Of course we’ll explore the project’s aesthetic and physical features at length. This is where your photos, sketches, room themes, and existing surroundings will help articulate the details.

We’ll want to understand your project’s completion requirements, and talking about budget and timeline will help us make recommendations in the context of these parameters.

There will be other things we’ll want to consider too as part of your project’s scope. We’ll talk about material preferences, how the product will function, the environment within which it will perform and how it ought to generally and specifically meet your needs and desires.

4. Preliminary Concepts

As we begin this step, we’ll study what’s learned in our step 3 Initial Consultation, and propose a number of solutions for you to consider. Maybe your original concept is quite prescriptive and simply needs to be carried out. Or it might be that we are most helpful here in narrowing the spectrum of things pondered.

We may achieve this through a single meeting or it may require more extensive correspondence to find just the right choice. Whatever the circumstances, we can help illustrate detail along with scale and proportion, refining ideas as we go.

5. Design Selection

When you’re pleased with your choice from step 4 Preliminary Concepts, we’ll proceed with you through a more in-depth development of the project plan. We’ll provide sufficiently detailed designs, offering further refinements if desired, and create specifications and illustrations from which we’ll formulate a project proposal.

Upon acceptance of the proposal, we’ll schedule your project in our shop and begin the actual work of creating your furniture.

6. Project Realization

This is where your furniture genuinely takes form, moving from concept to substance. For our work, we’ll create hand sketches and computer models, using these shop drawings to further define details of shape, proportion, and joinery. Special materials and components are obtained at this time and processes unique to the project are designed. Finally, craftsmanship is applied to lumber selection, fabrication, finishing, and assembly, ultimately realizing what was conceived at the start. And through all this we’re in touch with you, reporting progress and requesting feedback.

7. Delivery and Support

As we reach completion, we’ll arrange for personal delivery of your new furniture, providing careful placement at your desired destination.
