Furniture Woods

Illustrated below is a collection of unfinished wood samples. The Domestic Hardwoods shown represent species commonly used for furniture making in the Upper Midwest and many other parts of the US. In addition to these there are many others less commonly used and still others from outside our region. The Imported Hardwoods specimens show the widely varied palette of colors available in these more exotic species.  In addition to species, the appearance of wood is also affected by the age of the tree at harvest, the orientation of cutting relative to the tree’s cellular structure, exposure to air and light, and the use of finishing materials.
